Community
Relations
SHPE-SV is made up of Hispanic professionals dedicated to the development
of the Latino community on a national and local level. We are glad to
support the Silicon Valley community through our EXCEL, NetDay programs
as well as other community services activities.

Community Service

throught the peninsula. Schools, museums, other professional associations
and corporations ask for volunteers from our membership for mentors,
speakers, instructors, role models, and NetDay leads. Below is a short

EXCEL
Mentoring Program
The EXCEL Mentoring
Program is a supplemental educational program for middle-school-age
minority (and non-minority) youths in the subjects of engineering,
science, math, history, and english. The program is a partnership
with the Franklin-McKinley School district. Headquartered at Sylvandale
Middle School in San Jose (map and directions).
The program is coordinated by volunteers. And our target group to
participate in the program will be Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth grade
students.
The start date of EXCEL
this year is October 1 2002. This is Parent's
Night, where SHPE professionals take the opportunity to meet
the parents, explain the goals of the program, and greet the students.
Program format
EXCEL sessions are held once a month, usually the 2nd Saturday of
the month. We meet at Sylvandale Middle School for sessions and
for bus pick-up on field trip events. Sessions last about 3 hours
and generally begin 9 AM, finishing up by 12 noon. On field trips,
we are usually back by 3 PM.
Become a Volunteer
We ask volunteers to commit to only 3 sessions per EXCEL calendar
year. Sessions are planned and executed by SHPE-SV volunteers.
The EXCEL program is open
and free to any interested students. Printout an application
for this upcoming 2002-2003 year. Turn the application in on Parent's
Night or mail it in.

NetDay
To help with the
advancement of Latinos in engineering and science, SHPE-SV has been
connecting schools with high Latino populations to the internet. Currently,
many companies have been partnering with neighborhood schools to connect
them to the internet. Unfortunately there are not many companies in
East San Jose where much of the Latino population lives. As a result,
our kids are at a disadvantage. SHPE-SV is committed to making up
for this imbalance in society by giving our children the access to
technology. |
This project is an example
of our NetDay Program where SHPE-SV delivers state-of-the-art technology
to our local Latino community. Click here
to see a list of the projects completed by SHPE-SV.
